The Stress of Motherhood

$
0
0
Do you ever have those moments during the early years of motherhood where you find yourself having to decide between one of two options; those being either the choice to sit yourself in a dark corner and pull out your hair, one by one starting with your eyebrows, or climb to the roof of your house, stand up straight and scream expletives out from the depths of your lungs? Either way it ain't pretty.

I'm having one of those days. Again. My youngest is eight months old and is still waking up several times each night for feeds. I thought this was supposed to stop at three months of age?!

Being woken up at 5:30am is not a great way to start your day. Accidentally falling asleep on your couch for fifteen minutes at 8:30am because you just can't physically keep your eyes open and waking up to a child sticking their poo covered fingers in your face isn't the greatest of experiences either. Even worse is realising the same child has finger-painted their own poo all over your fridge, tables and walls. Trying to clean up that disgusting mess while another child is hanging off you, screaming because you can't pick him right at the moment just adds to the fun. Knowing that I have a week to get my house in shape (seriously, it is like a bomb hit it) and push out a huge pile of product reviews before I fly off to Malaysia is also quite daunting.

Life was a tad easier when I hired a housekeeper to come in once a week but I had to break it off with her "It's not me, it's you"style after she abused my pay-by-the-hour arrangement by taking a whole hour to iron four trousers. That and I'm not ok with someone scrubbing their dirty feet with the same sponge I use to wash my plates with. Gross much?

After becoming overwhelmed with everything around me, I ended up shutting myself in the hallway, both kids crying at the door, trying to calm myself down from the inevitable mini mental breakdown that I am pretty sure all stay-at-home mothers have from time to time. To get out of it involved a long process of showering my poo covered child twice, finishing off the walls, calming the other child down, doing the dishes and making myself a coffee twice while I pulled out the old chalkboard and chalk to keep my eldest busy for a moment. The first time I burnt the milk (I make my coffee on the stove) and had to redo it. By the time my coffee was half drunk I found myself somewhat chilling out and returning back to normal. It was really the coffee that did it. It woke me up a bit while the process of sitting down and having a few sips took my mind off everything around me that needed doing. It's funny how at work I can handle thirty kids in a classroom with no worries and remain calm throughout it all, but my own two at home can drive me loco on a regular basis. Staying at home is definitely more stressful than having a career.

It got me wondering how do other stay at home mums get themselves out of those stressful moments? Is there something in particular that works for you? I find sometimes saying "stuff it, it can wait" to everything that needs doing and taking the kids for a breather in my backyard's sunshine and breeze cools me down at times. How about you? What do you do to de-stress and stop yourself going crazy? Do you have any day-to-day survival tips you can share?

Kenza Threads Collection

Kenza Threads is a brand spanking new Aussie hijab company based out of Perth (yay for locals!) that sell very colourful, bright, pattern crazy scarves (totally up my alley right there). They sent me three of their pieces to review.

All three scarves are large in size - very long and extra wide so there are no issues with coverage. They're also very summer friendly which is a must for most Australian cities, especially Perth, because it does get quite hot over here. I wore this blue Vibrance scarf for a very hot walk to the shops today and it (and my head) survived the heat.

The Bowed Up Lilac is sheer so you do need an undercap with it - a downer for me because I never wear them. Undercaps just add heat and I've always thought they looked crap (still do) so I wasn't going to go down that road. I managed to wrap it around my head twice and it became opaque. Problem solved.

The orange is very street style with its gold studs but it is a little too bright for my pasty white skin - a nice olive, tanned complexion would go really well with it though.

All of the scarves come in different colour options which you can check out via their website or Facebook page. Which is your favourite? Mine is the blue!

P.S: All Aussie orders include free shipping. All orders get 10% off with the code MissHijabi10.

Modest Sea Islamic Swimwear

$

I don't know about you but I find it hard to find a full cover bathing suit that is of course not only modest but stylish at the same time. There are a lot of Islamic swimwear companies out there selling similar products but a lot of them, while Islamic in terms of modesty, have quite missed the mark when it comes to looking stylish while doing so. I know the focus should be on being covered and that's it but I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted to look good while doing so. I can't help it; I'm a woman and one that likes pretty things - what I wear being no exception. Call it vanity, but there is no way I am hitting the beach or local pool in anything I feel ugly in, even if I am going to be spending the majority of the time half covered with water.

Style, like beauty,  is subjective and "in the eye of the beholder" as many people tend to say. For me, an all black simplistic burkini with subtle details is a million times better than something ghastly designed with a million ruffles and extra over-the-top add-ons to compensate for the lack of skin showing. Maybe my Western mentality is taking hold of me, but I tend to go for pieces that are designed with a European sense of style. After all, being a Muslim woman that lives in Australia I find I am already going to stand out on the beach for what I wear so I'd rather have a full cover bathing suit that blends in with a Western notion of style; be it on trend patterns, colours or traditional cuts (I like things loose while still maintaining a silhouette, not a baggy mess!).

Modest Sea (if you remember I have done a giveaway with them in the past) certainly cover all the aspects of design I require in a modest Islamic swimsuit. Their pieces are streamlined so they will never be tight or baggy (just nicely in the middle) and are on-trend when it comes to fashion.

They have an all black swimsuit that you can mix and match with a range of swim dresses as shown below or you can purchase a design that includes subtle detailing. These are my picks from the website in their full covering swimwear range (they also have plenty of non-hijab modest swimsuits if that's more your thing):

The mix and match sets to add a little fun to an otherwise plain swimsuit (I adore the middle one):

Full covering bathing suits in a chic European design with a nautical twist:
Plain black or colour detailed:
You can take a look at their whole range of full cover bathing suits here via their website. Which would you wear? I'd pick the Alex & Sabrina combo.

Confetti Fair, Australia's biggest party planning fair, is launching in Perth this November after successful boutique party fairs in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It's going to be held at the South Perth Community Hall on November 23rd (11am - 4pm) and you could be attending with a friend thanks to pSquared Communications
The popularity of throwing a gorgeous soiree, rather than a simple get together is on the increase. As a host you want to have a theme running throughout the whole event from the guests’ invites, to the delicious sweets on the dessert table, to the decor in the room, or out in the garden.
There are new blogs popping up every day on how to throw the perfect party and the number of new party businesses showing up on social media is quickly growing.
However there is no one place that you can go to see all of this under one roof, until now. Confetti Fair is a place where you can come to find creative party ideas and inspiration, receive amazing styling tips, taste delicious sweets, choose themes, pick stationery and find that perfect floral arrangement.
Confetti Fair will cover every little detail and give you the confidence to
put together a fabulous party of your own; a wedding reception, engagement party, first birthday, 50th wedding anniversary ~ it could be any type of celebration that deserves a party!
From time to time I do little tea get-togethers at my house so this is something I will be attending myself to get more cute ideas for my home gatherings, future kid birthday parties, etc (I'm also in it for the scrumptious cakes that will be there). If this is your type of thing make sure you come along (you can buy tickets online here)! If you know of someone who has a business that fits this creative party mould then make sure you tell them to register here and show off their own handy tips and party services/products at the fair. I'm personally trying to persuade a friend of mine to register because she makes such amazing cake creations that need to be shared!

Here are quick pretty videos from the Melbourne do...

To win a pair of tickets to come along, simply email me your interest at info@misshijabi.com with the subject line of Confetti Fair. The winner will be chosen and contacted closer to the date. Good luck!

Malaysia Trip: Langkawi Adventure

$

I've just got back from a week long (child free!) getaway with my husband to Malaysia. It was our third trip to KL but this time we decided to add in a resort/beachy type experience and spent the first two days in Langkawi - a tropical island off the main coast of Malaysia.

A photo I got of our resort (It was huge! I couldn't fit the whole place in one shot.) from above in our plane.

Getting there wasn't fun as we missed our transfer flight and had to wait around at the airport for a few more hours to get the next one which ended up being delayed. Being sat behind two Arab guys who kept laughing and playing with the aircon funnel because one of them kept farting stench bombs wasn't fun either. I don't get it. You are sitting two rows away from the toilet and you can't manage to get up and expel your poisonous gases in there instead of continually suffocating everyone in the enclosed space around you? So disgusting, rude and inconsiderate. I couldn't wait to get off the plane just to get some fresh air into my lungs and change into clothing that didn't smell like sweaty Saracen man arse.

By the time we got to our hotel in Langkawi it was dark, we were hungry, tired and pissed off so all that was left to do after checking in and freshening up was to head down to the shopping strip in our rental car, grab something to eat and head back to the hotel. That left us with only really one full day of sunshine to lay on the beach, go swimming, jet skiing or do some island exploring. As luck would have it, it rained like a mofo so swim we did not. Instead I managed to coax my husband into taking some outfit/review pics for me for the blog (I will show them later this week) in the sprinkling weather with our camera, poolside and beachside.

Prettiest palm trees.

The rain did leave a lot of time for me to indulge in some bathtime (I don't have a tub at home). It was so relaxing to lay back in the water with not a care in the world while staring out across my balcony to the swaying palm trees and deserted beach outside our bungalow. On last year's overseas trip I tried the same thing only to have a child unceremoniously dumped in the water with me courtesy of my husband. "Mummy's alone time" lasted a good two minutes. Thankfully this experience was  lot longer. The only thing missing was a good book and perhaps some candles.

On our last day we went on a mini road trip to the other side of the island, the best part of which was seeing the Langkawi countryside. It is very pastoral in some places and thick with jungle trees in others. Seeing a buffalo in a rice field one minute and a wild monkey the next is such a crazy thing - very different to the odd wombat or kangaroo here in Australia.

The roads were crazy (no speed limits as far as we could tell) and there did come a time or two where we nearly had an accident - one involving a crazy 4WD driving on the wrong side of the road that was speeding and just managed to swerve at the last minute before crashing into us (picture me screaming) - the other involved us turning a corner and almost smacking into two monkeys that had pretty much come out of nowhere and ventured onto the road. I can't even begin to tell you the instant terror I felt inside my chest at that moment. I probably would have hyperventilated had we hit them. Thank God we didn't. I wouldn't know how to deal with the guilt of hitting an animal.

The resort we stayed at was the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa. The staff upgraded our room at check in so we managed to grab a beachside room which I was more than happy with because of the amazing views and beach locale. The room included breakfast - a massive buffet spread of Western and Malaysian food although I tended to gravitate more towards the fresh fruit, omelettes, pastries and a little traditional curry. We ate outside by the pool and the hanging gardens which were beyond beautiful.

The kids pool at this place is awesome and made me feel guilty about not bringing our children along but at the same time I definitely needed a break from the stresses of motherhood. The only problem was that every time I saw or heard a baby I felt terribly homesick and just wanted to be back with own.

I loved staying there and wished I had longer on the island but had to leave to travel to Kuala Lumpur - pics of which will be shown later along with many review items I was sent just before I travelled. Look out for them!

Poolside Pink

Can I have a do over on my holiday? I want to rewind a week and jump into that pool! The layout was amazing and there was hardly anyone around when we were there taking photos for this gorgeous pink abaya that Nadia from NA Exclusive Abayas sent me prior to travelling. Make sure you check out yesterday's post that is chockablock full of pics from my recent tropical island adventure to Malaysia's Langkawi Island.

The abaya is cut in a waterfall design as are most of the pieces Nadia has sent me so if you want to know what the back looks like you can check out past reviews for the company I have done. The pink slit is one solid colour - I know it looks a little tie-dye here but that extra hue of pink down the bottom is thanks to the water I soaked up as I moved around the outskirts of the pool in the rain nervously hurrying my husband along with his emerging photography skills because standing in public and having to somehow stand awkwardly alone and pose while someone takes my picture always makes me feel like such a douchebag. I don't know how other bloggers manage to do it on a regular basis with strangers watching. I don't lack confidence but I am shy when it comes to these sort of things.

I can't believe how lucky I was to find pool chairs covered in cushions in pretty much the exact same shade of fuchsia as the abaya. Meant to be I guess...

Once again there is an inner belt hidden away to pull in the abaya as loose or as tight as you want around the waist area. I think you have to cinch it in somewhat because the heavy drape of the arms and back would be aesthetically a little too much if it wasn't. I'm a fan of curves so this kind of cut suits me and I love how the tail of the abaya smooths out into such a flattering silhouette.

The design of the side slit is quite visually lengthening - not that you can see it, but I am wearing flats in these photos and it still makes me look super tall so if I added in heels into the mix it would look like I'd have legs for days, so if you are looking for an abaya to make you appear taller (whether you are on the shorter side or not) then this baby may be the one for you. You can also get it made in any colour you want if pink isn't your thing.

The hand sewn floral detailing is sweet and keeps that illusion of length going.

Uber + Klein Fancy Dress Giveaway

Halloween isn't a thing we do in my family. Actually, to think of it I don't think I have ever had someone come to my door asking for treats before on All Hallow's Eve but I do know that this American tradition has been catching on in Australia over the last ten years to the point where lots of children's schools and even my daughter's daycare will have special dress up costume parties around the end of October as something fun for the kids to get excited about whilst getting them involved in some imaginary play.

I used to love getting dressed up in my mum's clothing to pretend I was a fancy lady in her high heels, necklaces and her lipstick which I stole. One time my sister and I even pretended to be wolves under our willow tree and stuffed a leg each of mum's pantyhose with newspaper and tied it onto the back of our all black clothing as if we had a (rather stiff and lumpy) tail. I've even got a picture of it somewhere. Sadly we did not have a Bear Grylls moment and eat raw meat while howling under the moon, but there's always next time.

The chance to pretend you are someone else for a moment is magical when you are a child. In your imagination you could be anything and anyone that you wanted. I wish as adults we pretended a little bit more. It just seems to be all work and no play for us grown ups.

Sad. Moving on.

Uber + Klein are a Perth based stylish concept pop up store currently residing in Claremont Quarter that have plenty of little tools to help your child's imagination skyrocket with lots of rather cute costumes, some of which I have in my hot little hands, ready to pass onto some of you!

Uber + Klein very kindly have a Batman costume (will fit a newborn to nine month old baby) and a vampire costume (suitable for a 5-7 year old) to give away, but the coolest of all are the self-decorating goodies. A huge castle is waiting to come alive and the best part is your children can have all the fun of decorating the King's (or Queen's) abode. There is also a King's and a Queen's costume that comes with some very awesome fabric markers for your child to colour in and design as they wish.

I heart Baby Batman.

Design your own fun. Castle and King & Queen costumes as seen below...

I have a penchant for patterns. Always have, always will. There is something exciting about them that continues to draw me in whether I'm looking at a piece of art (Hello, Jackson Pollock... or as my friend likes to call him "my boyfriend" because I get so excited about his abstract work) or a piece of clothing. They make viewing more fun. It is as simple as that. The Love to Dress design Australian label SORA sent me nicely fits into this little visual love affair of mine.

I was meant to take some really cool photos of this on my recent holiday to Malaysia but it never ended up happening. It was so hot over there that the idea of taking many photos in the grueling, sweaty heat just turned me off blogging anything once we hit Kuala Lumpur (photos of which shall be shown later). I was literally having multiple showers and clothing changes each day just to feel somewhat comfortable. Australia gets really hot in summer and is of similar temperature as Malaysia but the difference between our two countries is that Australia's heat is dry while Malaysia's heat is that sticky, wet tropical hotness that makes you want to curl up into a ball and drown yourself in a pool of melting ice. Never has a cold shower been so welcoming.

The dress, once tried on back in Oz's burgeoning summer, I found to be perfectly suited to the current weather. The material is a good lightweight cotton and is so breezy and cooling. I'm getting sick of the synthetic fabrics used in most clothing nowadays. They suck in summer. Bonus points for this dress having a lining.

I ended up taking pics over two days (hence the two different shoes used).

I bought these shoes a few years ago now from Myer. I instantly adored their old timey look. They remind me so much of the character folk dancing shoes I had back in the days I did ballet (a more grown up version anyway). Thy are also slightly Wicked Witch of the Westish, which I love.

I feel like their should be an "Cousin Fatima's wedding. Iran, 1972" caption on the pic below, lol. Too much filter. Don't take your pics at night, kids.

A change of heels and venue... I love these damn shoes. They have to be my favourite, even though they turn me into a ten foot tall freak of nature. Boost me up, baby... the higher the better.

The cape is one that billows - it's very loose and matches perfectly with the hue of the dress. Both items were sent to me by SORA (at different times). At the moment the Inayah brand (where the cape is from) is 40% off while the dress brand is 30%. So if you are interested in either offerings make sure you pop on over to the SORA website and grab yourself a designer bargain before the sale ends. P.S: Free shipping for Australian orders!

My baby boy... the perfect accessory ما شاء الله.

The perfect length for tall women. I used to order all dresses and abayas to cover my feet à la Khaleeji style but find the shoes on show so much more feminine. Plus what is the point of owning cute heels and never seeing them?!

Well that title certainly sounds like a bad romance novel...

This post was a long time coming. Since I got back from Malaysia I have been looking after my children, both of whom became sick (one with the flu, one with a reaction to a vaccination) and lo and behold now every single human being in my house has caught the flu bug (as expected). I'm currently laying on my couch nursing a sore lower back (anyone else always get body aches with the flu?), battling a runny nose and drowsiness - all on two hours sleep. I just want to close my eyes and snooze the week away but of course being a mother of two I do not have the luxury of that option. If only I could rewind to my holiday...

This fantastic tropical pool setup at the resort I stayed at in Langkawi was a perfect background for taking outfit pics although with the constant rain I only managed this and the abaya review shown last week.

Before packing for our getaway I was on the lookout for a new swimsuit because the others I have weren't the right fit for me anymore. American company AlSharifa heard my cry for help and stepped in, sending me their Riviera swimsuit. I was originally wanting another design (the Laguna) but I was talked into getting the Riviera by their incredibly helpful staff. They knew what design would be best for me in regards to my height and the length of top I wanted (not too long, not too short - ideally about mid thigh) and I'm glad I listened to their suggestions because it was a perfect fit. I hate Islamic swimsuits that come all the way down to the knee - I think they are too restrictive movement-wise but at the same time the ones that reach just under the bum are way too short for modesty's sake on anyone who isn't stick thin. Mid-thigh tops are the go for me and I seriously could not be happier with the fit.

I like the minimalist style of this design. In retrospect the one I originally had my eye on would've just made me look top heavy while this one is a more streamlined and lengthening.

The sides of the top can clip onto the pants. This is a function a lot of companies are now using to secure the top and prevent it riding up in the water, although AlSharifa's clips are way more handy and easier to use than the simple fabric ties some companies include. I hate messing around, undoing knots in a hurry (especially when they are wet) so clips work for me. There is also a drawstring on the pants which I didn't need to use, but may be helpful for shorter people who need to instantly take in the pants a bit.

The top has an attached hood but I never wear those things. I hate the way they look so I always end up rolling it down my neck and wearing a normal hijab. I'm a leisure swimmer, not an athletic swimmer, so nine times out of ten I don't put my head under the water. Knowing this, AlSharifa sent me a very pattern heavy scarf (above) to use as a tied up turban to go with it, which I will do next time I go to the beach.

Whilst taking these pics I wore my new beach cover-up open kaftan. It is a little too short for me but in saying that you wouldn't want it long enough to trail on the wet ground (or sand if you are hitting the beach).
On a side note, there was another woman there with her family at the pool and she had on the exact same swimsuit as me. We kinda gave each other that look in passing as if to say "Well, this is awkward".

Loving the reversible patterns of this turban...

Emerald Elegance

So by now I have quite a few different kaftans from different designers hanging up in my closet by I have to say that this piece is by far my favourite. It is quite similar in design to the Kardashian orange one I reviewed last year which was my former favourite until this Yara Yosif piece came along.

It's the colour. Emerald green has got to be my favourite colour. I hardly ever wear it because finding green clothes actually isn't too common so most people would assume it was pink (I do buy a lot of it) but when I do find it I latch on like a dog with a bone. It's regal in hue and of course harkens back to my Irish roots of the old Emerald Isle

Offset by elaborate white-silver stones that surround large emerald teardrop shaped jewels and delicate golden bronze hued bling, this piece is stunning. I know nowadays people overuse that word to the point where they will call anything somewhat attractive "stunning" when in reality it is barely average, but this gown deserves nothing less than the true and proper meaning of the word. I'm pretty sure the words that came out of my mouth when I opened the package Yara Yosif sent me was "Are you effing kidding me?!" because it was so damn beautiful. Even the full length satin green lining could be a dress on its own. I had just the slip on when my husband made a comment about liking the dress. I had to tell him I wasn't finished yet as I slipped on the actual kaftan and permanently blinded him with bling.

I wish it was socially acceptable to wear glamorous kaftans every day, everywhere. I'm going to have to wait until someone gets married (invite me?) or has a party (no one I know has parties) or go to a formal community event (which I hardly ever do) to really get good wear out of this gorgeous kaftan. I'd only ever wear it with my silver crystal embellished heels because there is no way you could really wear any other colour with this design. No need for heavy jewellery either - I just went with an antique silver and emerald ring to keep the focus on the dress. There's no need to go overboard with accessorising.

The fit is flowy (as you can see below) and easily slips over your head. It is not figure hugging at all although there are fabric ties on the back of the hidden slip. Sizing is a one-fits-all affair while the kaftan is very long so if you are on the shorter side of life you will have to hem it up a tad, but for tall women it is perfect and then some. Side note - don't let your kids near it. Or cats. Or anything that is attracted to bright, shiny things.

Needless to say I love, adore and am obsessed with it, etc. You get the point.

Chocolate Mousse Cups

I've never been a chocolate mousse fan. Who would want to order a gluggy, viscous mess when you can order something as decadent as mud cake if you are really going to jump on board the chocolate express? I've never made it before but lacking flour the other night (and therefore unable to make a proper cake for dessert) I ended up venturing down the mousse side of life and making what you see below. It was dead easy, super quick and tasted delicious. Bonus points for no baking!

I served mine in some pretty little cup & saucer sets as I couldn't be bothered searching for my dessert glasses amongst the piles of pots and pans in my cupboards. They looked a lot cuter like this anyway.

The recipe I used was this Donna Hay one. I didn't have raspberries so instead I topped mine off with grated chocolate pieces which worked out better for me because I'm not generally into the whole choc/fruit mix thing.

Got kids? Make it extra cute by serving your children in a kid's tea party set. Polka dot for my princess... of course.

Getting a two year old to stand still whilst holding a mini chic mousse cup was near impossible. Way too much food excitement going on behind the scenes!

Style Love: Kim Kardashian Mesh Top

Kim Kardashian isn't exactly a style icon of mine (do I even have any besides Ulyana Sergeenko?  Probably not) although I am secretly loving her new upper class society wife look she has going on. This ensemble she was spotted in a few days ago is a lot more modest and toned down than her usual getup (minus the obvious chest show you get from the front thanks to a sheer top - hence me photoshopping it out a bit which is obvious if you compare to the original pics). Overall, I love the simplicity and elegance of it and thought a slightly modified for modesty version would be perfect with hijab for a chic city look.

I found some of the items she wore (such as the skirt and clutch) and have also included some similar pieces that caught my eye. Scroll through the prettiness below and simply click on the image if your wallet starts shaking in readiness to purchase.

What do you think of her look? Is it something you would wear?

Apparently Gossip Girl was full of fashion and amazing outfits. I wouldn't know; I never watched it. I lost the passion for watching highschool dramas right around the time I left high highschool (was Dawson's Creek the last one I engaged in? Oh Pacey, it's been so long...). Nevertheless I did manage to see this young lass pop up on various style blogs because of her clothing choices. I give you her latest offering:

As a print I think the design on this Marchesa Voyage outfit of Leighton Meester's is so pretty but the cut and the fact that it is quite jumpsuity in appearance puts me off. Plus there are pointy shoes. I've always hated pointy shoes. They remind me of witches feet.

From a modesty point of view it is pretty much perfect; whack on a grey/black hijab and you've got some pretty good walk out the door hijabi readiness action happening, but I still wouldn't.

I think worn as separate pieces it would work better - together, along with the stripes, it just gives off a fancy resort wear pyjama effect. Even with a solid thrown in somewhere (a tank top, blazer, etc) it would look fab, just like these older Dolce & Gabbana pieces below. Pjs never looked so good.

As it is, maybe with a better fit, a chic high bun and a darker lip colour it could be transformed but the way it is now I'm more on the nay side of things. How about you? Are you yaying or naying this ensemble? How do you feel about pyjama-esque outfits in general?

{P.S: My top PJ picks are below}

A drive-by display of images taken over my dashboard as we cruised through the city of Perth yesterday towards Harbour Town where I shoved Japanese food in my mouth and left an hour or two later with more bags of crap I don't need. Enjoy the road trip...

Fancy streets to get mugged in after dark.

Abstract neon green 3D art in the middle of a city square. In my mind it totally screws up the ambience created by the surrounding historical buildings. I'm all for a little art to brighten the place up but I do think this thing is in the wrong place. It's an eyesore compared to the architectural columns behind it.

I've always loved how the streets become littered with Christmas decorations starting from early November. No matter what city in Australia you are in, you are bound to experience a little welcome tinsel this time of year. The Christmas carols can go eff themselves though.

Art is sprawled everywhere throughout the city. These kids live under a bridge on the way to Harbour Town. I think they're bloody ugly but I appreciate the colour scheme in an otherwise grey world.

Signage underneath a cloudy canopy.

This building looms over the mall carpark. It always reminds me of lego or building blocks.

Maybe tetris?

Family lunch was a quick stop at Shimizu. It was either that or gozleme as we only ever really eat from those two places, minus the odd waffles & ice-cream at Gelare. I got a Donburi Teriyaki chicken, while dipping my fingers into my hubby's Katsu Curry Chicken. Was damn good. So was the iced tea. I didn't partake in the grass.

Spring Rolls. Gotta have some crunch to your lunch.

Close up of the very geometric Perth Arena.

Railway walkway.

Need to see this. I've read all the books and although the first movie disappointed a bit (wasn't graphic enough like the novel and missed/shortened parts of the plot) I feel compelled to complete the viewing. Just have to drag a willing friend along.

Heading home...

Openness.

Industrial hinderlands.

My outfit for the day and a sneak peek of the next fashion related blog post that will be coming up later tonight - a berry hued, long-sleeved wonder dress that I have worn probably about three times in the last week. Excited to show you guys that! Stay tuned.

Peace XOXO

Out with the old and in the with the new. Or out with the black and in with the colour, would be more specific. As somewhat discussed previously, I am kinda over black. I unconsciously wore it and pretty much only it for so many years and only after realising it was quite draining on my face did I pull away and start making a more conscious move towards colours - be they bright or subtle. They're a lot less heavy on the eye and I find them so refreshing to wear. Why I abandoned them for so many years is beyond me. I guess I just got stuck in a rut.

To add to my newly colourful wardrobe, Nour Hijab (a West Australian based company), sent me a couple of their latest pieces - the Adriana abaya and a matching hijab that I had my eye on for its bright splashes of neon.

The abaya was custom made to my measurements so I got a perfect fit - perfect width, perfect length, you get the point. The dress has a slight flare to it that elegantly swings around your body as you move. It's quite ladylike in that regard.

The only thing I am not a massive fan of is the slight puff of the sleeves at the top. I'm already broad shouldered so I tend to stay away from any design embellishments in this area because of this reason as they just end up widening my shoulder area. My shoulders & hips are in proportion so it isn't a major thing but I do try to keep away from anything shoulder related to ensure a more streamline silhouette. I don't think it looks bad on me - I guess I'm just more aware of it than anything else. If you haven't got a broad frame then I don't suppose this design feature would bother you at all. It's a very feminine addition to an otherwise simple garment and would definitely give a little shape to more petite girls.

In general, I adore the simplicity of this design because it means it will go with pretty much anything I throw at it as long as it is colour complimentary. I've been on the lookout for a feminine dress like this for the longest time and am so happy I got my hands on it. It's got this modern Amish hint about it that I adore. I think it's the cut - so simple, demure and feminine.

The Neva Style scarf was a welcome addition. Equally as pretty and feminine.

Weather note - Perth is basically desert temperature at the moment and I wore both of these out in the sun and survived the heat. Such a great lightweight fabric for summer!

The laser cut lace shoes, a recent purchase, are so damn comfy. I've never had heels before that I could actually walk around comfortably in for a long time. I even go grocery shopping in these babies because they are so comfortable. They're not too high either, which helps.

Details.

Make sure you visit their Facebook page and head on over to their website as there is currently a sale on dresses and the scarves in the Neva range!

My Favourite Concealers

Now that I'm old and decrepit (or on the way at least), good quality makeup is more important than it ever used to be. I'm consciously trying to buy better quality makeup and skincare and forgo the craply made drugstore/cheaper versions. Now don't get me wrong - my favourite makeup brand of all time is Revlon because it's cheaply priced and fantastic quality so obviously you can't always depend on a brand by price or label alone. Just because it costs more or is from a certain design house does not mean it is the best product out there, but in saying that most of the time a $60 foundation is going to be better formulated than a $10 one. You would expect so anyway.

Back in my high school/university days I would buy makeup based on price alone. Working long nights in a casino making cocktails and coffee until 5am in order to pay rent (I became independent and lived by myself from about sixteen years of age) and studying, half dead, during the day didn't leave much time for makeup research. I would just buy any old old thing and hoped it would A) suit me and B) do what it said it would. I remember buying a new foundation from the The Body Shop and every time I would venture outside in the rain the bloody foundation would turn to white powdery spots on my face like I was a rare albino giraffe running wild in an urban jungle.

It was beyond embarrassing but I kept using it because I was not going to waste the money I paid for it. You would expect The Body Shop to have good products because of all their marketing and global success but this one sucked. $30 was a lot to me back then because every dollar I spent came from every dollar I earned, so I felt cheated out of my money. That was a while ago and they probably don't even sell it anymore but it definitely stopped me from buying foundation products from them again; scared I would have a repeat horrible experience.

Back then trial and error was pretty much the name of the game. Thankfully these days we have YouTube and tons of beauty "gurus" to help us along when choosing good quality products. A lot of the self-called gurus in my mind are really just girls who bought a few Sigma brushes, collected some colours from Mac and decided to show the world how you too can look like a tranny in under twelve minutes tops. I don't follow many people on YouTube but I swear by +pixiwoo and +Lisa Eldridge for these reasons:  They are bonafide, working internationally renown makeup artists. If you are paid to do makeup for this month's Vogue cover then hell yes you are qualified to call yourself a guru. They are highly skilled, heavily experienced and knowledgable when it comes to all things makeup related.

I personally adore the looks +Lisa Eldridge creates because they are tasteful, always feminine and never over the top. I like makeup on myself and other women that is still somewhat natural looking, especially when it comes to the skin. The six layers of wall paint looking foundation and boot polish-esque eyeliner look does not appeal to me. I think every day type makeup should be about enhancing your natural beauty instead of transforming you into a dolled up circus clown intent on scaring small children.

I wish I could apply makeup like they do. I tend to watch more for the product focus than the actual tutorials so when it comes to my time to purchase something new I will already have a short list of recommended products from trusted sources. I nicely blame these ladies for my concealer purchases...

Where I use it: Under eye area.
Why I use it: My skin colour in general is quite fair but the skin under my eyes is a lot lighter than the rest of my face so I use a little bit of Clinique to go underneath it in order to have the area more smoothly blend in with my upper cheeks. The consistency of this product is thin so it's perfect for this area as a heavy/thicker product will end up looking heavier and thicker once applied. The skin under your eyes is thinner than anywhere else on your face so it makes sense that a thinner concealer would be more appropriate. Clinique's Fair is also the perfect shade of fair that I have come across to smooth out this area for me.

Where I use it: Upper eyelids and general highlighting/brightening
Why I use it: It is a lot thicker than the Clinique and seeing as the skin above my eyes is thicker I prefer to use a thicker concealer in this area. My freckles that were once cute and youthful looking ten years ago are now joining up in an age-spot spectacular so I like to use a little concealer in this area just to get a more uniformed look to the skin. I'm into the whole bare eyelid look (not really a fan of coloured eyeshadows beyond staple nudes/browns/neutrals) and this does the job. It's also great as a subtle highlighter so a swipe down the nose and above the brows doesn't go astray.
Mine's looking chewed on because it has been chewed on. Kids. Teething. I'll say no more.

Where I use it: Along my jawline
Why I use it: I don't get acne. I used to have it really horrifically badly in my early twenties thanks to a nasty skin infection and the only thing that got rid of it was a very strong dose of prescripted Roaccutane that cleared it all up but also made me go through sensitivity hell for a few months. Since then I don't suffer from it anymore but I do get what my dermatologist referred to as female hormonal acne which basically means you get the odd spot along your jawline and hairline around the time that you are menstruating. Thankfully I only get a few blemishes along my jawline and they are nicely in the areas that my scarf naturally conceals so the only time I ever need to use concealer in this area is when I'm around other people when I'm not wearing my scarf. I use this concealer because it is very thick (therefore has extra coverage) and super matte. I tried using it once under my eyes but it was way too heavy looking and made me look worse.
I blame this on the MAC consultant I bought it from. I was matched up to this colour in Malaysia and I always felt like it was the wrong shade for me but under department store lights you can never really tell. Once back home in Australia, I spoke to my friend who works for Chanel because she deals with makeup and matching people up to colours every day and she suggested to me that this colour wasn't for me because the woman who matched me might only be used to matching Asian ladies who naturally have a yellow toned skin (I have pink undertones) and I have to say I agree with that theory because the MAC foundation I also bought is equally too yellow looking on my white skin.
Overall the concealer is a great product for covering blemishes but I do think I need to go visit an Aussie MAC counter to get matched up by someone who is used to dealing with Australian pinky/freckled skin.

Cheap Finds: Cute Rings under $40

Rings are my favourite piece of jewellery. I'm so used to having at least one on that if I walk out of the house without it, I end up feeling like I'm missing something, lost something or left something behind. You know that "Oh crap... something's wrong but I don't know what..." feeling? That's honestly what I feel when realise I'm out and not wearing one.

I'm kind of a ring fiend. I can go without necklaces and bracelets. Don't even bother asking about earrings because I mostly stopped wearing them when I started wearing hijab - there really wasn't any point in having them on when you can't see them. I used to be a major earring lover but I guess that love has transferred over to rings once I donned the scarf.

Here are twelve very stylish rings - all under the $40 mark (some are even $20!). I want them all. Greedy, I know. Which would you get your hands on?

Labato Leather iPhone 5 Case

I just recently switched over to an iPhone 5 and was umming and ahhing over buying a phone cover because they sell for around $20 for very basic plastic ones here in the local malls. Knowing I can get them for a lot cheaper overseas stopped me pulling money out of my wallet. Thankfully I needn't bother as I was sent a couple of phone covers at pretty much the exact right time that I was on the lookout for one.

The Labato phone covers are sold online via Amazon, AliExpress andEbay.

I chose the flip open style as shown below because it is made of good quality leather and has two handy open viewing panels that show you the time and grant you access to the swipe/answer call button without having to open the actual case up in a rush.

The case I was using for my former iPhone 4 was this Michael Kors one and while the card slots were handy and the cover was indeed very stylish, overall the whole having to open it open just to answer a call was getting annoying. I think we all prefer the easiest access possible, especially during those times our phones are ringing whilst being swimmingly lost among the crap filling up our handbags.

I was sent the Labato phone cover in rose and black - kind of a His & Hers affair considering both my hubby and I have the same phone model. Obviously he laid claim to the black while I grabbed on to the very girly pinky rose.

The chic packaging also comes with both a front and back clear protective sheet to put on your phone and a cleaning cloth for your phone. That's pretty awesome considering here they charge $10 just to put one of those screens on your iPhone.

My Husband's cover.

The leather is handcrafted and hand moulded to perfectly fit your iPhone.

Colour contrasting with my new bag from Dareen Hakim. Yes it says "Habibi" (My Love) on it. Yes my husband raised an eyebrow or two at the fact my bag is obviously flirting with any stranger it passes by. If you love the bag (and let's face it - if you have good taste you will) then make sure you come back to the blog later today as I will be having a giveaway for one of their amazing clutches! In the meantime check out their website for 20% off plus free world-wide shipping.
