Style Focus - Abaya Styles on the Red Carpet

I found this very interesting visual article from the BBC on the hopeful emergence of the abaya in Western fashion circles. It only goes for a few minutes and contains interview excerpts from the major abaya label founders of DAS and Barjis.

I've seen more and more celebrities wearing abaya-esque cut designs for formal red carpet events, so in a way the beginnings have already been made; after all at its most basic level it's just a long sleeved, long dress, regardless of which colour is used. Keep in mind we are talking about a statement abaya (the flashy, Westernised, designer type) not the casual, plain ones you run to the shop in to grab some milk. Just check out Angelina Jolie who I have featured before because of her regular usage of elegant long abaya-like outfits.

Her Elie Saab coral split dress would be a perfect abaya (minus the split of course). DAS have a similar style, available in light peach, in their resort 2012 line. Matched with Louboutin heels, Montana ring & Anaconda grey moonstone ring.

Carrie Underwood in a gorgeous silver white floor length gown next to Effa's sequinned edgy wonder from their Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

For a truer abaya version, I love Roselle's entire collection. They always incorporate lots of lovely old European style lace, reminiscent of a bygone era, creating a dainty look mixed with the traditional black abaya. I can imagine Cate Blanchett's recent Oscar dress perfectly amalgamated with any Roselle abaya.

What do you think? Do you imagine statement abayas ever being worn by non-Muslim women on regular style basis?

...a.k.a "Why bother getting dressed at all?"

I hate this whole see-through maxi skirt crap that is going on right now. Every time I see an awesomely pretty long skirt in a stunning floral fabric I go a bit nuts in my head, waltz on over and then silently yell expletives at the retail buyer of whatever chain store I am in at the time because for some reason all the trendy shops seem to think women love the idea of long skirts and maxi dresses that are not only transparent sleazy man-catchers, but also seem to scream "Hey! Look at my crotch everyone! Isn't it swell?!".

Exhibit A:

I mean really... why?! Just why? Put some pants on before your mother sees you.

3/4 looks from ASOS.com
I'm really not a fan of it. It's beyond annoying finding these everywhere and normal maxi skirts absolutely nowhere! Way too bizarre for me to comprehend; this half-finished look, plus it is a massive shame because most of these layers would be rather pretty with some decent lining.

What about you? Regardless of whether you wear it or not; are you a fan of this trend?

Fay Tellaoui Turquoise Abaya

I saw a recent abaya from Australian designer Fay Tellaoui and instantly fell in love with the design and more importantly the colour.

Anyone who regularly reads this blog knows I am an avid abaya lover and wearer, but that all of my abayas tend to be black. I usually don't go for coloured abayas because the ones that stick out in my mind are the atrociously ugly ones I always see when visiting Egypt - mismatched, blind-person-made-these type designs with huge unnecessary pockets, bells and ridiculous zippers in random places that serve no purpose (with slashes of tartan thrown in). They made me want to throw up. This on the other hand I wanted to grab with both hands, swing it around my head and scream "It's mine! It's mine!" like one would in an old 1950's horror flick. You can imagine my delight when Fay messaged me, sending me one over to review. Here is one quick combo pic I took on Instagram when I received it:
I got it within a couple of days, tried it on and loved it even more. At first I was a bit hesitant because most abayas/long dresses I am sent are always custom sized for me and this was one of the first times I have been sent an item that wasn't tailor made to perfection. You see, I always have a problem with length. I'm not Frankenstein tall but at 5'8 pre-made maxi dresses and the like are never adequately long enough. This one was. Huge surprise. Loved it. Not only that but it was a perfect fit, which brings us back to the controversy over the original photo.

The controversy was over the sizing of the piece in the image. The designer very clearly commented multiple times that there was a sizing issue on the day of the photo shoot (the gorgeous model ended up being curvier than expected for the smaller sized abaya sample she had) hence the form fitted appearance. Straight away I knew the remedy was as simple as "buy a bigger size" but unfortunately many people on Facebook are not too good at reading comprehensively and/or lacked common sense, even when another photoshoot image of a much looser version was floating around on Facebook too. Not once did anyone say that this image promoted "proper hijab" (actually the designer stated quite the opposite), yet many people still protested. I understand why some people had an issue over the image, but a lot of people got way too worked up over something they could simply click away from. I knew it was a simple sizing issue and was more than ever determined to prove these closed minded people wrong.

Please take into consideration that at the moment I am 6 months pregnant, so of course the abaya will a lot looser on me in general after I give birth and deflate in pretty much every area I own. I was surprised to find it still comfortably fit my very pregnant figure and wasn't tight at all considering the baby that is hiding underneath that fabric.

Before it arrived I was actually considering getting my sister or a friend to model it because I thought there was no way I could get my pregnant self into the size I ordered. It was genuinely a complete shock to see my ballooning belly fit into it so easily and nicely, with ample room left over. I could probably do a few lunges in it, if my legs knew what lunges were.

This is still the most comfortable abaya I now own. The tactile material is of a stretchy type, yet it is not clingy or thin at all. It gives a very smooth appearance to the body, is extremely comfortable to wear and covers easily from neck to toes. The colour is as vibrant as it is in Fay's photoshoot and perfectly suits the oncoming summer months here in Australia, although I'd be more inclined to wear this on cooler days because the usual 40 degree celcius weather we get here in Perth will make you melt and sweat unless you are wearing tissue paper thin material.

The abaya costs $130 and is available for purchase either from her Melbourne based shop or by contact via email or Fay's Facebook profile. It's well worth the money for the unique design, gorgeous colour and great quality workmanship. Plus it's Australian, so you know it's going to be good ;)

Just a quick word of warning - it is selling out very fast due to the hype over the design via Facebook. Some sizes are completely gone so if you wanted to order I suggest doing so ASAP. Also, Australian clothing sizes run concurrent to UK sizes but are different to US sizing so beware of that if purchasing. You can order via her facebook page that she has just opened up or by emailing: faytellaoui@live.com.au.

Review - N A Exclusive Abayas

I've had this song in my head all day since hearing it on the radio this morning. Pretty appropriate considering I feel like a giant shiny disco ball in this abaya and when you are a massive bling lover like I am, it's always a good thing. Going for a nude, lightly glittered manicure today also helped it along. Anyway, on to the abaya...

I was sent this gorgeous abaya from NA Exclusive Abayas for review. There were literally over a hundred designs to choose from but after searching through the multitudes and narrowing my list down from about twenty finalists, I kept going back to this one because it is simple, elegant and can be worn at any age.

I'm at the point in my life when fun, young looking designs have to be carefully considered. I'm trying to go for more mature, classic pieces that I can wear well into my thirties when that comes around in a few years time; hence me going for this elegant and very sophisticated abaya. I feel I can float around in this formal style piece for many years to come as I plan to grow old gracefully while staying away from anything too "young" and "mutton dressed up as lamb" as we say here. I don't actually go shopping that much, so from now on anything I do get my hands on has to have a certain classic and enduring style to it, which this abaya certainly has.

NA Exclusive Abayas do produce their own designs while making those inspired by current abaya designers. It is a great alternative to have, especially for those of us who can't afford those huge designer price tags of $800+ and/or don't have access to our own abaya tailors as they readily do in the Gulf.

The black sequins cross over the body in a unique way, being secured by a belt that is hidden on the inside. The belt is not only functional but handy for me right now because being six months pregnant means I can loosen and expand the abaya as my pregnancy goes along.

Not only that, but I finally have a blinged out, sparkly abaya to wear to formal type events. I now just need somewhere awesome to go to for dinner where I can show both this and my new YSL clutch off. I'm obviously thinking somewhere a few steps up from a McDonald's drive-thru for a shitty fish burger which has been the extent of my outings lately. Yeah, I'm getting old and boring like that.

Oh, just remembered Eid is supposed to be next week. Guess I have my perfect outfit ready :)

This abaya costs $175 and is made from good quality nidah fabric which is renown for being lightweight and durable while giving off that slinky, luxurious feel. It also came with a matching hijab but I chose to exclude it from my photos in order to properly show off the glittery neckline.

The design includes a draping waterfall aspect to the back of the abaya, which means your backside is always covered in one of the current, most up-to-date abaya styles coming out of the Khaleej region. I now have three waterfall abaya designs hanging up in my closet and they are the ones I get the most comments on thanks to their unique, feminine design. It helps that all of the abayas I have seen sold in Australia are the generic A-line fit, so anything that is more creative in design always gets attention for being that extra bit different to the norm. I'm sure in places like Dubai, these style of abayas are as common as salt & pepper, but here it is a totally different thing.

I don't have any complaints about this abaya. Love the fabric, adore the style and treasure the fact that I finally have an abaya I can wear to night time special events without relying on tiny bits of jewellery to do all the shimmering for me.

Check out N A Exclusives Facebook page for more of what they offer. They are constantly updating their stock so it is well worth a look. You can find the piece I chose here amongst a plethora of other waterfall cuts. The lovely Nadia made me this design exactly to me specified measurements and gave me a huge range of colours to choose from (hot pink, green, red... basically anything I wanted) but I went for the black sequins so it would co-ordinate with any accessories I threw at it. All of her productions can be custom made, including size, colour and fabric so she can re-create pretty much any design you wanted.

I definitely recommend her services. Can't utter a single complaint regarding this abaya!

What do you think about the abaya? Would you wear one?

Review - Amirah Fashions Bohemian Jilbab

Let me start off by saying that these last few weeks have really done my head in. I think I have spent nearly every weekend trapped indoors because my toddler keeps picking up a new illness every week from the cesspit of a daycare she goes to. Last week it was constant vomiting throughout the night that made me cancel all my weekend plans. Then during the week that followed I picked it up and was spewing uncontrollably. Lovely, I know. This weekend it was baby diarrhea time. Nothing says "joy" more than changing nappies at least every hour. It's been horrible for both of us.

To finish it all off this morning my daughter decided she hated my computer and beat it down gangster style by throwing a cup at it. A cup full of water. Destroyed everything. My laptop won't even turn on. It's basically up shit creek without a paddle and so are all the pictures I took yesterday for today's review. So in a mad rush to finally get this piece uploaded, I had to redo everything this morning and then fix it up on my husband's Mac which was an exercise in itself because Macs are basically in another language to me. I can't figure them out.

Ah, anyways...

I have reviewed for Amirah Fashions before when Zainab sent me this very awesome beige jersey abaya that was a hit with many readers who went ahead and purchased it after seeing my review. This time I have my hands on a new abaya from their collection - a black stretchy piece (the Bohemian pull-in-waist jersey jilbab) that funnily enough goes perfectly with this giant stomach that is hiding another baby inside of it. I'm currently somewhere around my seventh month of pregnancy (I think - I've lost count) and am feeling/looking it. This abaya helped fit me in without any kinda of awkwardly tight squeezing and helped out in the back area of the garment due to it's fantastic loose and drapey design. The only area it isn't doing too well on me is the bust - it fits comfortably fine but with that ever increasing bust size preggos like me go through, it does mean I have to wear a scarf over my chest to make sure I don't look like I'm carrying a duo pack of airbags around my neck.

The pleated section in the front also helps to minimise the baby bulge as well. It's pretty much perfect for a maternity dress, even though it's not meant to be one.

Also... fitted, push-up-able sleeves. My joy in abayas. It also has a bit of a batwing design to the upper section of the arms which helps hide numerous unwanted areas.

Check out the cute bohemian-esque buttons on the waist line. They're a nice added touch.

The abaya also includes a hidden inner belt to adjust the waist as you so please.

I seem to use Instagram a lot more than I blog, mainly because of the ease and instantaneousness of it all. Knowing that a lot of you don't use Instagram made me want to do a regular rehash of pics I have taken (mainly of food, jewellery, etc). Up to the current time, here are some of my favourite shots from the many I have taken straight from my phone over the last six months...

Nails & Beauty related...

A cute embroidered purse I picked up in Malaysia, divine L'Occitane Pivoine Delicate peony scented mist and floral scented Sportsgirl hand creme. I love this mist. I picked it up on a whim at the airport in KL, on the way home to Australia this year. My husband had some Malaysian money left in his wallet just before we were due to board the plane and since we were right next to the L'Occitane store I quickly bought this as it cost the exact amount I had in my hand. Best instant buy ever. I love its smell - so light and girly.

Sally Hansennail art in a very hippy design.

Revlon mismatched duo of Fuchsia Fever & Posh

Revlon mix of Knockout and Radiant, brought to life by my coral YSL ring. Loving the skin colour difference between my and my husband.

Clothing/Things sent to me from companies...

A rather large and brightly coloured brooch sent to me from Islamic Gems that I have yet to include in an Outfit of the Day post.

AFay Tellaoui abaya I reviewed a while back, matched with a recent necklace buy I got from here in Perth for $45.
Silver sequinned and bowed shoes I've had for ages. I took this snap as I sat bored, waiting for my facial to start months ago.

An abaya (still haven't shown on the blog) that I made myself from left over material I had at home. Sitting in Dome in Pavillion, Malaysia.

Close up of an Effa abaya I received from 3abaya.com. Still need to wear this on the blog too. So many things I need to catch up on!

A Boutique Al-Khaleejia abaya I was sent a few months back that I reviewed. I wore it today to work and got quite a few comments from women who loved the design. It was good to wear as I could adjust the inner belt to accommodate my pregnancy.

A recent purchase - Magenta hued YSL Belle de Jour clutch that my friend kindly picked up for me in Paris.

Close up of a white nude mani and my favourite little coin purse!

Food. Glorious Food.

A recent fresh fishburger from Dome.

Iced chocolate and caramel vanilla malteaser mud cake.

A rose petal topped pistachio cake my very talented friend homemade for a dinner at my house a while back.

Another friend's homemade cupcake

Eating shitastic noodles while watching the very funny Irish comedy Mrs Brown's Sons. This is one show I actually laugh out loud to while watching. One of the very few.

Waffles.

My sandwich press is my best friend - toasted vegie and chicken roll for my husband.

Oreo cookies & cream cupcake a friend made.

I've been rather quiet on the blogging front for the last couple of weeks and the reason why is because I am in Egypt, playing nurse. We usually come for a visit at least once a year for a holiday/to visit my hubby's family but this time our visit is strictly medical related, which means my time is spent playing nurse/caregiver to my mainly bed-bound patient.

I pretty much haven't left the house so I don't have any really awesome dinner/lunch outing pics to share, nor are any of my outfits worth posting because being at home means I'm wearing whatever is laying near and clean. Hardly stylish, hardly worth mentioning.

As soon as I am back in Australia near the end of the month I will have a few abaya reviews to share with you guys from a few different abaya labels. I could get them delivered while I'm here but the truth is the postal service is a bit shite in Egypt and there is always the looming risk of your stuff going "missing" before it even reaches you, if you know what I mean. It's definitely not trustworthy so to be on the safe side all reviews will be coming strictly from the regulated safety of Australian soil.

In the meantime, I have been posting a little bit on Instagram so check that out if it so tickles your fancy: @misshijabiblog

Until next time...

Lost all my stuff, gained an abaya.

I've been in Egypt for about a week now and pretty much haven't ventured outside (see last post for explanation).

Getting here wasn't fun. I hate the actual travelling part of travel.
After three flights we arrived in Cairo only to be faced with the dreadful fact that Singapore Airlines had lost my bag. My bag with my new YSL clutch that I haven't even used, my $2000 camera, all my favourite abayas (including those gifted to me from designers), all my child's clothing, my best scarves and my shoes. They couldn't even tell us where my bag was. They had no idea. Getting basically a "meh" and a shoulder shrug as an answer to the location of my shit was even more frustrating.

As compensation they offered me a $50 voucher for losing my belongings. Fifty dollars. I wanted to tell them to shove it up their arse considering some of my abayas are worth over $500, hence the $50 wouldn't even clothe me for a day. It's like burning someone's house down by mistake and going "Here. Here's a rock. Shelter yourself."

I waited three very anxious days. Finally they found my bag and I had it delivered to me. The bag itself was broken. The handle was snapped completely off. I think they beat it up. Either that or they put it in a dog fight. Probably against some vicious pitbull.

I still don't know what the delay was exactly, but I was beyond grateful to get it back. I was so worried it would either be lost forever or have things stolen from it; specifically my camera. Never, ever checking that in again. Strictly carry-on baggage from now on!

The worst part of it all (besides the worry) was having to live in the same abaya for three days. I wore the very comfy abaya that Amirah Fashions sent me a few weeks ago. It was perfect for flying - comfy and stretchy, but after three long flights to get from Australia, to Singapore, to Dubai and finally Cairo (plus a two hour drive to Alexandria) it smelt awful. Sweat, food markings, toddler drool, dust and grime from the Egyptian air... I couldn't stand the smell. I had to keep wearing it while going shopping for a cheap, quick replacement to wear until I washed my Amirah Fashions one. I finally found an abaya in my length for about $30 in a store in Manshia. It's a bit villager/fellahin looking but it's Egypt, not Dubai, so I can't really expect anything fabulous, especially in the area I was shopping in.

The abayas here are either the black typical souk style with a trillion crystals, ruffles or weird elbow jointed studded eyebrow raisers or you can choose from the many multi-coloured awful messes with ribbons, "designer" rips and zippers pointing down towards your crotch, all in lovely contrasting shades of lime green and orange. As you can tell, I ain't crazy about the fashion here. It's too matchy-matchy and the decorations are overkill, especially considering in my culture less is more

Oh no, I have a cage on my chest!
I'm not a fashionista myself. I don't follow fashion per say because the whole notion of being "on trend" is ridiculous to me. I do however like style and this is one thing I find lacking to my own subjective liking here. Egyptians definitely have their own style but you can pretty much guarantee that most Westerners (myself included) would think twice before donning it. It's on another level that strays from the safety of what we are used to.

Exhibit A & B from popular Egyptian label R & K containing large amounts of random strips of cloth, over matching, lots of denim and layering to the max. Here this stuff is quite trendy and in demand. They have some nice pieces I would wear in my very safe little stretch of style but most of it is too bold for my taste.

Would you wear the local fashion fashion on display? Or is it a little too out there for your own tastes?

Snacks by the Mediterranean Sea

This morning we woke up and headed down to some sort of architecture club down by the sea. Quite ironic that is was a club for architectural types because the place looked like shit and didn't have any aspects of design (modern or traditional) attached to it at all. Peeling paint and an overall sense of derelict isn't a design I'd see anyone go for.

Moving on...

I wore a patterned sleeve abaya that I didn't get any pics of - kinda hard when your tripod is back home in Australia and your toddler is cranky/tired and needing all of her Mama's attention. This was about all I got...

Foodwise, I had a very watery hot chocolate and a simple serving of roz bil laben for breakfast (Arabic rice pudding with ice-cream, covered in nuts and fruit). It wasn't fantastic (Sabr have the nicest roz bil laben in Alex) but it was a chance to get some seaside pics in later.

The waves were crashing against the cylindrical sea barricades and tossing water up into the air, sometimes about ten metres high. It was good to get somewhat close to nature because there is a rather large lack of trees or wildlife for the most part in the Alexandrian city (excluding the street cats). I find I end up craving to get closer to the natural world every time I am here. A happy drive out of the city and into the countryside might be in order.

Watching the waves was peaceful enough and the sky was incredibly beautiful thanks to the pretty little rippled patterns that the clouds were intent on making. The gorgeous, almost watercolour, mix of varying blues, greys and whites were stunning...

...ruined only by the ever present piles of rubbish that are everywhere in Egypt. It's honestly disgusting how huge the disregard for the environment is here.

The view form the balcony - morning fisherman, traffic, apartments, cafes and rocks. Quite picturesque in a way.

Catching those fishies...

Braving the waves...

The ferocious slap of water as the rocks break up the shore...

Gorgeousness...

Details on the accessories below: I bought the scarf for about $10 at trusty old Kmart. The necklace was a recent buy from a local Australian boutique in Maylands. It's polished wood pieces, painted in contrasting candy pastels. $45 but worth it. It goes with so many of my scarves thanks to the wide colour selection used.   It's such a bright, happy piece - glad I bought it!

New Stuff: Steve Madden Shoes

I have huge arse feet. In American/Australian sizes I'm a size 11, a European 42 and a UK 9. Being tall, I guess it kinda comes with the territory so I can't complain too much but I tend to have a whinge every now and then when shopping for shoes because the options left for my size are usually revolting and butch or non-existent. If I go on ASOS and search for shoes so many beautiful things come up, but as soon as I search by size the results dwindle to a less than impressive selection of man style converse type shoes and footwear only die-hard tomboys or mine workers would regard.

I chanced upon Steve Madden, which many of you may have heard of, although I hadn't even though the company is apparently a pretty popular international shoe chain. They had my size in a lot of their awesomely feminine designs so I snatched up four pairs while their current Australian 40% off Boxing Day sale is on. I ended up saving a fair bit, even though in reality the prices for Steve Madden shoes anywhere else in the world (particularly the US) are a shitload cheaper. That's one crap thing about living here in Australia; we pay ridiculously more for basically everything just because of our location.

Anyways, here are the styles I choose. If you wanted to purchase them yourself I have linked the cheapest prices online I could find for the same models for both US and Aussie customers (although colour/print may vary) because there are a lot of short term Xmas sales going on now.

First cab off the rank - I picked up these gorgeous mint coloured wedges. Wedges are awesome. They're basically high heels you can actually walk in. Heels last about two minutes on my feet whereas wedges are an all day long affair. I love the fresh green summer colour and the knotted design at the bottom of the shoe.
Aussie sale price: $72 (buy here)
US price: $40 (buy here)

The second pair of wedges I grabbed were these babies. Floral print. I could not resist. I have floral sunnies, floral drinking glasses, floral serving trays, floral napkins, etc. I'm crazy about the girlier side of life. Once again huge price difference.
Aussie sale price: $54 (buy here)
US price: $20 (buy here)
Had to buy some heels and I got this sleek bronzed design for the chunkier heel at the back. I'm too heavy and awkward for thin heels so the chunky version was definitely more foot friendly.
Aussie sale price: $47 (buy here)
US price: $89 (buy here)

And last but not least - some cute coral thongs that are beyond simple beading. 99% of the time I wear flat shoes and I couldn't go past the hippy, bohemian aspect of this pair. I was tossing up between this and the green version but a lot of people on Facebook favoured the coral when I asked you guys, so coral it is.
Aussie sale price: $47 (buy here)
US price: $45 (buy here)

Normally I would wait until actually receiving the items to share any new stuff on the blog, but with the current sales going on I couldn't wait to share and spread the word as you might want to pick up a quick bargain yourself before the sales finish. The listed US prices will also go down a fair bit once their sale discount codes are applied at checkout.

Can't wait to get them! Let me know if you grabbed any shoe bargains over the Xmas break.

Review - The Abaya Company Blue Lace Abaya

Lace. It makes me think of ladies of yonder, Gone with the Wind, full skirted women decked out in gloves and hats drinking tea and pretty much anything else you would usually associate finely dressed women with. It makes me feel feminine every time I don it and so it should.

Lucky me was sent two lace featured abayas this week to review. The first of which you see here from The Abaya Company - a Dubai based label that custom makes their creations to not only your exact fit and desires, but also to your fabric and colour selection. I went with the default blue behind black lace for the sole reason that I'm more than slightly vain and blue suits me.

I got it sent in my size but it currently doesn't fit exactly right in the tummy region due to the fact that I have a rather small human swimming around in there for the next two months. I swear if I tried this abaya on in a few more weeks I'm pretty sure I would bust through it Hulk style, lol. It's very comfy thanks to the slightly stretchy  material but needless to say, I can't wait to wear it out after I give birth and deflate. To get a better idea of how loose it can be on a non-pregnant lady, check out The Abaya Company's pic here.

With it's big, wide, loose sleeves and fabric tie-around belt this abaya gives a nod to the kimono without going overboard and making me feel like a Japanese wannabe. I love the sleeves. I usually go for the fitted type that I can push up my arms but this extra wide/loose style is so damn elegant and girly that I can't help but love it.

Not to over do on the look, I kept accessories at a minimum.

Two simple entwined necklaces and an old jade & silver ring.

Dressed up with some grey and black bauble heels. The cute lace runner along the hem adds to the girly gorgeousness.

Cuteness.

Review - Downton Abbey Edwardian Style Abaya

I've been waiting to publish this review. I've been racking my brain about what to accessorise it with. Do I have a ring that matches?  Not sure. A necklace? No, that might be too much against the lace bodice. What about a demure bracelet? I have none. Argh. Then I was on the phone when my mum mentioned something about Downton Abbey and straight away I knew the perfect accessory to style up this abaya would be my best English china, a cup of tea and plenty of English-esque cakes and biscuits; in particular a traditional shortbread. I went out right away, stopped at Miss Maud and picked up some mini tarts and jam drop shortbread for props. I then drove home flashing visual ideas in my mind of how I could incorporate them into the review photos.

Problem was I got home, ate the bloody things and felt too full and bloated to stand in front of my camera, taking pics of my pregnant stomach plus the recent layer of biscuit that I added on top of it. FAIL. I did manage to stave off my hubby and baby girl away from the platters long enough to get a few snaps in and then saved a mere three biscuits to use in pics the next day. Somewhat of a success I'd say.

And on to the reason why we are really here... This:

N A Exclusive Abayas isn't new to my blog. I have reviewed for them before - if you would now kindly cast your eyes and memories back to this post about an awesome black sequinned abaya they sent me. It was a pretty popular one for obvious reasons. (Obvious reason being it was gorgeous).

This time around I choose their white lace/grey abaya duo - a replica of a Roselle abaya (N A specialise in designer replications, custom pieces and turning sketches into reality in pretty much any colour and material).

The overall style is extremely elegant and very old world in essence. I'm a big fan of the draping shawl style of the sleeves. Underneath are normal semi-fitted abaya sleeves, whilst an extra layer of chiffon is brought over the shoulders to the front to drape over not only the entire arm but also down the flank sides to the ground. They're even large enough to completely cover the front section of the dress, but I doubt anyone would wear it that way because it would cover up and conceal the main feature of this abaya which is of course the mix of grey chiffon lined with charmeuse silk and the white lace embellished with pearls and beads.

I ended up rummaging through my the bits of jewellery strewn across my house and found a white multichain necklace that matched the abaya perfectly.

It also gave me a chance to don the ring my husband bought me recently in Egypt. No other outfit seemed to match it but it moulded in quite nicely with this one.

My Burleigh china, given to me by my mother. Coincidentally they're currently having a 25-50% off sale, which is going to help me because my cat broke my teapot and I've been meaning to replace it for years.

Tea & biscuits anyone?

Check them out now - they are currently having a big sale on abayas and will also give you 5% off when mentioning "Miss Hijabi" while ordering. Try getting this abaya in a different colour. I think the white lace with pink chiffon would be awesomely girly!

About a week ago we went to our favourite (now not so much) restaurant for my baby's second birthday which gave me a chance to wear my new Steve Madden heels after finding out my original footwear choice didn't exactly fit too well. Damn flats are definitely NOT a size 11. My friggen toes were hanging over the edge, forcing me to pass them onto my sized 10 sister whom they fit perfectly. Thank you for not knowing true footwear sizes, Steve Madden. It was a pleasure losing my money to you. The heels on the other hand fit well and went together better with the abaya I had on. Double animal print will do that.

I wore these very high babies all the way from the car to the restaurant - a grand total of five metres. I was being cautious because of the pregnancy, but even on a non-pregnant night I would only limit heels to sit-down events like dinners because my feet + heels = short time love affair. Besides the fact that I walk like a truck driver in them, I can't handle wearing them for too long.

The restaurant had a major makeover since the last time I had been there and it looked amazingly pretty. I was excited for the food, considering the new owners had really done up the place. I was impressed with the look of the food but the taste was on the bland-to-crap scale.

I miss the old shabby looking restaurant with a food heart of gold. Their Thai curries were so delicious and creamy every single time. I never walked away disappointed. Alas, the new owners/chef delivered some shockingly watery dishes that either tasted like sprinkled-on curry powder or were just generally not impressive. Such a shame because that place was my favourite restaurant in all of Perth (and halal too!). Not worth going back to.

This is what the old owners use to serve up. Dear Lord I will miss it. Sad face. Moving on...

I got this Effa jersey abaya from 3abaya.com quite a while ago but never got around to posting pics on the blog, mainly due to my own laziness. It's silky smooth and soft with a luxurious feel about it. A whole abaya made out of jersey made me question if all my lumps and bumps were going to show through in extreme detail like a cheaper jersey will do, but this one didn't because of the high quality.

Speaking of bumps... I've got three weeks to go on this pregnancy. How did time go so fast? Time is ticking but I'm pretty calm about this one. My first pregnancy was so daunting and scary (as is most first time experiences) but I feel by the second, most women are like "meh... whatever" and know what's in store.

The abaya is open from the front, held together with a few snap buttons. Obviously designed to be worn with    pants/dress underneath.

The box that 3abaya.com sent the Effa package in. Fancy. Delicious looking. Exquisite. Even the tissue paper was pretty with their printed Arabic gold logo stamped all over it. So professional.

Hands down THE classiest packaging I have ever seen from any company. I'd still have it too if my hubby didn't throw it out. I know it was just a box but it was one I wanted to keep because of how pretty it was. Sadness :(

I have been sent a piece directly from Effa before - check out their jalabiya I was sent to review for them a while ago here in this older post. Beware - get ready for a colour burst of patterned purple and beading if viewing!

Well, I spent Valentine's day with my mum. Absolute epitome of romance right there. I've never really celebrated it anyway (not for any strict religious reason - just never seemed to get off my arse and get anything organised) so it was no skin off my nose.

We shipped ourselves off to the Margaret River Chocolate Factory in the Swan Valley for brunch and of course to pick up some choccies for later, which ended up "disappearing" from the fridge with no culprit owning up to the theft. Definitely wasn't me. I just stood in front of the empty plate left in the fridge, shaking my head with an elongated "you bitches" (although I did manage to grab a couple with a cup of tea before the chocolate thief struck).

At this stage I was about 5 days away from my planned cesarean (3 more to go - woohoo) so I was naturally feeling heavy and tired. I pretty much whale-walked myself to the cafe section of the factory and ate up a treat. Part of me intended to stay home for the last week to relax and rest before the big day, until the other half grabbed itself in a choke hold, shook for dear life and reminded me that I'll pretty much be house bound for the next month or so with the aftermath of surgery recovery and the dealings of a newborn baby so I should get out as much as possible now while I can. But with that in mind, I only seem to last about two-three hours before I'm aching to head back home.

I'm having mixed emotions about this pregnancy. For the last couple of weeks I have looking suspiciously at kitchen knives and thinking "If this baby doesn't come out soon, I'll evict it myself" because you know, cutting sandwiches and cutting a uterus open are surely the same thing...

I'm at the end of it, which means it hurts to walk, to move, to switch sleeping positions, to sit upright, etc - the whole thing is basically wearing me down and I can't wait to give birth, not only to see my son but to also feel somewhat normal again. At the same time it is a bit melancholic because for all personal intents and purposes this will be my last pregnancy. No more babies after this. I feel a bit sad about that so I'm kinda dwelling on the roundness that is my stomach at the moment. In years to come I am going to miss the pregnancy feeling but will of course look at the two children I do have and be thankful for their existence. It will be the last time I look like this...

On the menu:

A pot of English breakfast tea with one massive scone, accompanied with the usual jam and cream. At first I was a bit put off paying $5 for one mere scone but the thing was like a mountain so the price was understandable.

Followed by quiche and salad (vegetarian for me - ham & cheese for my mum). My daughter also got her own kids meal. The quiche was awesome. A little on the small side for $15 but so damn tasty.

It was such a summery day that I went with brighter colours and pastels for the morning out - all to match my much beloved lace tipped cardi that I wore over my sleeveless abaya (I'll have to do a DIY post on that later).

Review - Black Lace Abaya with Turquoise

I am back from the dead silence that was the end of my pregnancy. I "gave birth" (aka got sliced up by a team of surgeons the lazy way) about three weeks ago to my little boy and am now at home losing more and more sleep/sanity by the minute. Throw in a toddler and it's crazy as shit at my house at the moment. Oh, the joys of life.

At the moment I have five items waiting to be reviewed from various companies, so expect to see one review after the other here (as well as an ultra cool giveaway) in the next two weeks on the blog because I have a lot of catching up to do before anything new comes in and completely bombards me. It's funny how pre-kids blogging was fun, carefree and easy and now it is a major dilemma just finding enough kid-free time in the day to take/edit pics, blog, breathe, eat and everything else that used to be natural and stress-free. I love my babies but OMG they really take all the energy and time you have.

Enough about my dramas. Let's focus on why we are really here.

This abaya was sent to me from a Perth/Dubai based company founded on Facebook; E.Z. Khaliji Boutique. I went with their black lace abaya for the review and was a little bit worried it would look too similar to The Abaya Company piece I reviewed back in December. Although similar in design (the lace tinged style is very current in the Gulf right now) the blue to black variation was enough to satisfy me that I wasn't offering up to you guys a review of basically the same design. Plus, both gowns being accessorised completely differently makes all the difference. There were other styles to choose from but I just couldn't go past it purely for the fact that anything girly and old fashioned (such as lace) really draws me in.

The design on their Facebook page displays a different version of lace to the one I received (although I do prefer mine) and I found the lace bodice did not reach around my waist as it was meant to according to their pic. As you can see it doesn't quite cover all of my bust which means I had to unloop the belt from the belt attachments and simply tie it around my waist. It doesn't look bad but it does mean I have to later unstitch the unneeded belt loops from the bust because it looks a bit awkward just sitting on there. I think the fault here is me needing a longer abaya for my height, which the tailors did perfectly length-wise but forgot to add that extra bit of length on when taking the bodice into consideration. If I was shorter I don't think this would have been an issue at all.

Despite that hiccup I'm fine with the way the abaya looks. The overall length is good and it is quite loose without the help of the belt; I just tied mine in more at the waist because I like a bit more shape to my abayas as opposed to a tent-shaped dress. I know other women out there don't like any curves showing, but I am not one of them.

I love the lace on the sleeves and how it extends past the actual black material of the dress. It adds quite a delicate touch; you know how I'm all about the feminine.

Review - Glitter Abaya

Second abaya review of the week is set to go! Like I said in the last post, I have a lot of blog review stuff to get through over the next couple of weeks, so fingers crossed I get some kiddy nap time to let me complete them all.

Jay's Jilbabs (another Facebook founded business) sent me a custom made abaya based on this design here. Although they offer varying colour options, I decided to go with the all black as I find it looks more classic and not too in your face considering a mostly glitter/sequined abaya is by default a not too subtle style to wear.

Obviously a shiny piece like this isn't meant for every day wear - I ain't picking up the milk and bread in this ensemble any time soon.

I originally wanted the sparkly glitter as is shown on their Facebook page but due to my height and need for a longer size they only had a dull black sequin fabric available. It did come with a black fabric belt that sits around the waist but I decided not to wear it for the review because I already had a lot going on in that area thanks to the loud African inspired necklace.

Gotta be honest; at first I wasn't too crazy about the dull sequins as it didn't turn out quite how I expected it would. It kinda reminded me of dull fish scales upon opening the package but after wearing it a couple more times and seeing the reflection in the photos I changed my perspective and let it grow on me. I haven't tried it out yet, but I suspect this would be awesome at night worn under lights.

In certain light it isn't a true black sequin at all, instead it reflects more as a dark metallic blue/grey variation which kinda gives me the cool chain mail/shark scale vibe.

Options-wise, they have a lot of colours available, including a gorgeous dark green shiny sequin option against the black abaya material that I loved but didn't have enough for my height requirements, so if you are on the shorty side of life do yourself a favour and pick up the green version of this.
