Malaysia Trip: Langkawi Adventure

I've just got back from a week long (child free!) getaway. It was our third trip to KL but this time we decided to add in a resort/beachy type experience and spent the first two days in Langkawi - a tropical island off the main coast of Malaysia. (photos watermarked with old blog title).

Getting there wasn't fun as we missed our transfer flight and had to wait around at the airport for a few more hours to get the next one which ended up being delayed. Being sat behind two Arab guys who kept laughing and playing with the aircon funnel because one of them kept farting wasn't fun either. I don't get it. You are sitting two rows away from the toilet and you can't manage to get up and expel your poisonous gases in there instead of continually suffocating everyone in the enclosed space around you? So disgusting, rude and inconsiderate. I couldn't wait to get off the plane just to get some fresh air into my lungs and change into clothing that didn't smell like sweaty Saracen man arse.

By the time we got to our hotel in Langkawi it was dark, we were hungry, tired and pissed off so all that was left to do after checking in and freshening up was to head down to the shopping strip in our rental car, grab something to eat and head back to the hotel. That left us with only really one full day of sunshine to lay on the beach, go swimming, jet skiing or do some island exploring. As luck would have it, it rained like a mofo so swim we did not.

The rain did leave a lot of time for me to indulge in some bathtime (I don't have a tub at home). It was so relaxing to lay back in the water with not a care in the world while staring out across my balcony to the swaying palm trees and deserted beach outside our bungalow. The only thing missing was a good book and perhaps some candles.

On our last day we went on a mini road trip to the other side of the island, the best part of which was seeing the Langkawi countryside. It is very pastoral in some places and thick with jungle trees in others. Seeing a buffalo in a rice field one minute and a wild monkey the next is such a crazy thing - very different to the odd wombat or kangaroo here in Australia.

The roads were crazy (no speed limits as far as we could tell) and there did come a time or two where we nearly had an accident - one involving a crazy 4WD driving on the wrong side of the road that was speeding and just managed to swerve at the last minute before crashing into us (picture me screaming) - the other involved us turning a corner and almost smacking into two monkeys that had pretty much come out of nowhere and ventured onto the road. I can't even begin to tell you the instant terror I felt inside my chest at that moment. I probably would have hyperventilated had we hit them. Thank God we didn't. I wouldn't know how to deal with the guilt of hitting an animal.

The resort we stayed at was the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa. The staff upgraded our room at check in so we managed to grab a beachside room which I was more than happy with because of the amazing views and beach locale. The room included breakfast - a massive buffet spread of Western and Malaysian food although I tended to gravitate more towards the fresh fruit, omelettes, pastries and a little traditional curry. We ate outside by the pool and the hanging gardens which were beyond beautiful.

The kids pool at this place is awesome and made me feel guilty about not bringing our children along but at the same time I definitely needed a break from the stresses of motherhood. The only problem was that every time I saw or heard a baby I felt terribly homesick and just wanted to be back with own.





I loved staying there and wished I had longer on the island but had to leave to travel to Kuala Lumpur - pics of which will be shown later along with many review items I was sent just before I travelled. Look out for them!
